Saturday Postgame: Week 9

Some thoughts and observations from a wild and entertaining day in college football. Perhaps a so-so season is beginning to bleed into a fantastic November...

Texas has asserted itself as the top team in the country (right now) with two dominant road victories the past 2 weeks, this one in Stillwater more impressive than last week in Columbia. The explosive Texas offense has been joined by a smothering defense.

Speaking of smothering defense, Penn State's continues to gain steam week after week, anchored by an unstoppable defensive line and behemoth linebackers. Jared Odrick is on his way to an All-American season, he should join Alabama's Terrence Cody as the 2 first team defensive tackles this year. It's a shame PSU flopped against Iowa, the Lions are improving by the week and their defense could match up well with anyone. Circle your calendars for September 11 of next year, when Penn State visits Alabama in what should be a delight for fans of defensive football.

In 2002, Ohio State ran the table in unimpressive fashion, ekeing out close victory after close victory on their way to a national championship. Sounds a bit like Iowa this year, doesn't it? The teams share some similarities: QB's who won't wow anyone but come up with clutch plays when it matters (Craig Krenzel and Ricky Stanzi), defenses who can be dominating at times, and conservative coaches who don't care about highlights, just wins.

It's still early, but it's beginning to look like there will be more than 2 undefeated teams worthy of a national championship invite. Let the inevitable clamor for a playoff begin!

Houston and Southern Miss rang up 1,358 combined yards, yet only 3 points were scored in the 3rd quarter.

Oregon's thrashing of USC was delightful, and all but eliminates the Trojans from the Pac Ten race. It could come down to USC and TCU or Boise State for the last BCS at-large spot, in which case the Trojans would almost certainly and unjustly be selected.

Notre Dame University is located in South Bend, Indiana. South Bend, Indiana is 1,301 miles from San Antonio, TX. Washington State University is located in Pullman, Washington. Pullman, Washington is 2,104 miles from San Antonio, TX. Strangely, the two played in the Alamodome in downtown San Antonio tonight. Can someone tell me why?

Why has no one called Frank Beamer into question for the way Virginia Tech fails to meet expectations year after year. Like clockwork and like Clemson, the Hokies inevitably fall to lesser opponents in October seemingly every season. Yes, Virginia Tech has had 5 straight 10-win seasons, but have had 3 or more losses in 4 of those 5 years. I mean no disrespect to Coach Beamer - he's put Virginia Tech on the football map and gave us the wonderful term "BeamerBall". But when one of these headscratching losses happens once, it's an anomaly. Twice, it's a pattern. Three times, it's a trend. Virginia Tech may never break through to the top of the college football world while Beamer's the head coach. I hate to say that - Beamer's a great guy and a good coach - but it's true.

Don't look now, but Georgia Tech at Duke in 2 weeks could be for the ACC Coastal title. The Blue Devils won again, and they're just one win away from bowl eligibility. An astounding 25 students decided to make the trip to the game in Virginia today rather than attend basketball practice!

Looks like Tim Tebow did deliver that speech - the Gators finally looked deserving of their #1 ranking with their whipping of Georgia.

What looked like a fairly blase day in college football gave us a multitude of crazy plays and unforgettable, last-minute finishes. At least 7 games (Miami-Wake, Rutgers-UConn, UCLA-Oregon State, Cal-Arizona State, Southern Miss-Houston, Florida State-N.C. State, Mississippi State-Kentucky) featured game-winning scores in the last 2 minutes, most of them touchdowns. Add to that UNC's last second victory over Virginia Tech Thursday, and you end up with a pretty compelling week!

And finally...

Dear Michigan,
HA HA HA HA!
Sincerely,
Jason
